Toy store Toys“R”Us is jumping on the tablet bandwagon with its first ever consumer electronics device, a 7-inch Android tablet for children.

The Tabeo is designed to be an affordable tablet computer for young'uns, giving parents peace of mind with parental controls and 50 pre-installed kid-friendly apps, including twenty games, a numer of entertainment and activity apps, and several book apps to help children learn as well as play.

Since children have a habit of dropping things, particularly when they are expensive, the Tabeo comes with a removable lime green bumper that will help protect it from falls. Additional bumpers in different colours and other accessories will also be on sale.

The tablet runs on a 1GHz ARM Cortex A8 processor, with 1GB RAM and 4GB flash memory, which can be expanded with microSDHC cards. The 7-inch TFT LCD display has a resolution of 800×480 and the battery life is an estimated 10 hours of normal use. Throw in WiFi, USB 2.0, and Android 4.0, and you have a pretty decent tablet for the price.

“Over the past year, we’ve spent considerable time talking to parents and children to determine what features and functions they really want in a kids’ tablet, resulting in tabeo,” said Troy Peterson, VP and Divisional Merchandise Manager at the US division of Toys“R”Us. “We are proud that tabeo offers robust and flexible parental controls that can help protect children as they surf the Internet, and we are pleased to offer the tabeo App Store, which features only kid-safe content carefully curated by the Toys“R”Us team.”

The Tabeo launches on 21 October and will cost $149.99.
