Twitter is bringing the look and feel of its own Android and iOS app to twitter.com on the web, in the aim of making the app’s look and feel more consistent across platforms.
Twitter has announced some changes to its website, which will incorporate some elements of the mobile applications for Android and iOS. In a tweet, the explanation was simple: “We’re now rolling out a refreshed twitter.com reflecting the look & feel of our iOS & Android apps.”
The intention is to have a more consistent look and feel across mobile and desktop platforms. In fact, the brighter color scheme seems reminiscent of iOS 7’s own look and feel.
The black navigation bar at the top of the Twitter interface will be replaced by a lighter, cleaner design. The navigational elements — Home, Connect, Discover, Me and the search field — will remain the same.
There are no changes to functionality, although Twitter’s mobile and desktop efforts have started to evolve and even merge through time. For example, in a recent update to its iOS and Android apps, the microblogging service has given highlight to its Direct Message service. The DM button is now found on the main navigation bar, instead of being buried under the Me tab.
Observers believe that the focus on direct messaging may have been brought about by the rising popularity of cross-platform instant messaging services like WhatsApp, Viber and Line, among others. Twitter may be considering a spin-off of its private messaging platform as a means to engage users and even monetize its service.
The update is being rolled out on a gradual basis, so users who are still seeing the old, darker design, can expect to see the newer look soon.
