Two new Windows 8 phones announced by HTC

At an event in New York City, HTC revealed two more Windows 8 smartphone offerings, including what will be HTC's flagship Windows 8 device, the HTC Windows Phone 8X.

So far, the only Windows 8 action we've seen for cell phone devices has been the Lumia 820 & 920 by Nokia, which have certainly made quite a splash with their specs and wireless charging abilities. But now the playing field has just gotten a little more interesting, with two new devices which will run Window's upcoming latest offering of a mobile operating system.

The two devices are the HTC Windows Phone 8X, and 8S. The 8X will end up being the manufacturer's flagship Windows 8 device, and offers a good spattering of specs, according to an article written by PCMAG. These include,

  • A 4.3" 720p, Super LCD 2 display. According to HTC, this display contains 341 pixels per inch, which is an even higher density of pixels than that of Apple's "retina" display. At this kind of resolution, the individual pixels on the display are indiscernible to a viewer at a typical viewing distance.
  • Windows 8 (of course) which is a fast OS, but even further improved by the phone's processor:
  • A Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro – this is a 1.5-GHz dual core mobile proc, which should improve gaming performance on the device – at least, whatever games will be available to Windows 8 users.
  • An 8 mega-pixel rear camera, and a front facing 2.1-megapixel camera with an f/2.0, wide-angle lens. Additionally, the phone records in stereo sound.
  • Most users should be pleased by the internal storage of 16-GB, but those with a more insatiable appetite for memory will be disappointed to learn that there is no memory card slot for the phone. So, expansion is not an option.

The HTC Windows Phone 8S, a satisfying specimen to be sure, will not have as many impressive specs as its big brother, the 8X, of course. Some of the differences are,

  • A slightly smaller 4" 800-by-480-pixel Super LCD
  • A 5-megapixel rear camera, also with stereo recording, but no frontal camera to speak of
  • The 8S offers a mere 4GB of internal storage, but thankfully allows for expansion by way of a memory card slot.

An interesting note about these phones is the bright array of colors they feature in, which are also present in the Windows 8 Nokia Lumia phones. This could be the "style" which Windows 8 ends up being associated with. It would match well with the overall simpler design of the operating system, with its Metro interface and big buttons.

Whatever the case, it’s quite possible that consumers and tech enthusiasts alike will get a broader sampling of Windows 8 smartphone devices at Microsoft’s upcoming event in NYC.
