VR-Zone attended the Sony VAIO P “Pocket style PC” media launch in Singapore today.

Kazutoyo Araki, Senior Manager of Business Planning and Strategy for VAIO Global (center in above pic), gave the opening speech and presented the new VAIO P.

Unlike the CES announced US model, the local version does not have built-in GPS or wireless WAN 3G Mobile broadband. But the good news is, the price tag starts from SGD1,299.

Sony Unveils New Pocket Style PC

Sony’s new VAIO P series is engineered for absolute mobility with innovative technologies and premium design

(Singapore, 8th January 2009) – Sony Singapore today took the wraps off a brand new form factor for its VAIO range of computing products. The new VAIO P “Pocket style PC” is an 8-inch full-featured notebook PC fitted into a pocket size that’s less than 20mm thin and is about the size of a business envelope. The new VAIO P series combines premium design as well as wireless function to fuse mobility with style and usability.

Pocket size but big on comfort
Roughly as thin as a cell phone, the VAIO P weighs just 594g with a solid-state drive (SSD) and 620g with a hard disk drive (HDD). The size and weight mean it is ideal to slip into a pocket or handbag. That said, the VAIO P series does not compromise on usability and is engineered to provide the feel of a full-sized notebook. The “Pocket Style PC” provides a comfortable typing experience by extending the keyboard to the edges of the chassis, maximizing the typing area. To reduce typing errors, the VAIO P also sports the iconic isolated keyboard design.

Apart from a notebook-size keyboard, the VAIO P series also incorporates a new high-resolution 1,600 x 768 LED backlit ultra-wide display to make viewing of even two full web pages side by side easy. The 8-inch LCD incorporates various LCD technologies to produce images in brilliant detail, including an anti-reflection coating that reduces light reflection for razor-sharp viewing on-the-go.

The style for an enriched lifestyle
Stylish enough to take anywhere, the unit is available in an array of premium glossy colours; Garnet Red, Olivine Green, Obsidian Black and Crystal White. Made to look like polished mineral ore, the attractive colours are painted on the magnesium body in multiple layers, and hand-polished on top to achieve the premium glossy look.

The high build quality is carried through in every aspect of the design, including the full flat surface, the screw-less bottom as well as the torque-hinge. To complete the premium experience, matching carrying cases and Bluetooth® colour-coordinated mice are available.

The usability for a new mobile experience
The VAIO P series has an Instant Mode that directly launches into Sony’s Xross Media Bar interface for quick boot up and access to music, video, photos and the Web.

The VAIO P series runs on Windows® Vista in normal operation and supports other software, which are routinely found in full-size notebooks. Additionally, there is also a windows arrangement utility preinstalled for easy organising of all open documents or websites, all with a single touch.

To complete the mobile user experience, the new VAIO also provides other productivity and connectivity driven features such as a built-in webcam, noise-cancelling technology/headphones (only VGN-P15G), built-in wireless LAN 802.11b/g/Draft n and Bluetooth®.
