Fudzilla reports that ATI's flagship Evergreen GPU, Hemlock, will release in late November, a few weeks later than expected. The product releasing first is rumoured to be branded ATI Radeon HD 5950. Such a branding would indicate a change in ATI's previous "X2" moniker. A HD 5950 would suggest a dual-5850 card. Fudzilla suggests samples are already out (as expected) and the TDP is exceeding 300W (not expected at all).More next page.
Fudzilla reports that ATI's flagship Evergreen GPU, Hemlock, will
release in late November, a few weeks later than expected. The product
releasing first is rumoured to be branded ATI Radeon HD 5950.
Such a branding would indicate a change in ATI's previous "X2" moniker. A HD 5950 would suggest a dual-5850 card. Fudzilla suggests samples are already out (as expected) and the TDP is exceeding 300W (not expected at all).
As we know, dual GPU cards have much lesser power consumption than the theoretical doubling of their single GPU siblings' TDP. Consider the HD 4870 (160W TDP) and HD 4870 X2 (285W TDP). Or GTX 260 (216 core, 55nm, 171W TDP) and GTX 295 (289W TDP, and it includes an extra SIMD cluster too!). This may be due to voltage binned chips and components shared between the two GPUs.
Following this pattern, and given HD 5850's TDP of 151W, we would have expected a TDP for the HD 5950 of around ~260W. Furthermore, the pictures previously leaked all clearly suggest the presence of a 6pin+8pin PCI-e power arrangement, all clearly suggesting a TDP below 300W. This is why Fudzilla's claim comes as quite a surprise.
Of course, the HD 5950 will be the fastest single card on the market at release, and Fudzilla also suggests that the Fermi dual-GPU product is still set to launch in 2009, so the HD 5950's performance reign might "only last a few weeks".
As for the HD 5970, Fudzilla shadows quite a doubt over it. Of course, unlike the HD 5950, if ATI were planning to put two HD 5870s (188W TDP) on board, there would most probably be the requirement for a downclock.
Hemlock was previously set to release in late-October, and rumours/demonstrations have been leaked online since September. In recent times, however, discussion on the Hemlock has subsided. We can speculate as to why the latest rumours suggest a later, late-November release. It could be a shortage of Cypress dies, or perhaps, there is no requirement for it right now. The rumoured price for Hemlock was $499, and it would make sense if the HD 5950 falls into this bracket.
