Updated: [Rumour] Nvidia Fermi to be demonstrated in January?

While Nvidia and a few other reporters (most notably, Fudzilla) claim Fermi based products are well on their way, a host of other reporters are now claiming Nvidia is “doing their best” to have a working Fermi demonstration at CES 2010, which is scheduled for 7th to 10th November.

Nvidia’s original release date was apparently set for late November, but recently Fudzilla reported that this date was shifted to December. Meanwhile, most other sources claimed retail availability of Fermi would only happen in Q1 2010.

are now claiming Nvidia is “doing their best” to have a working Fermi
demonstration at CES 2010, which is scheduled for 7th to 10th November.

Nvidia’s original release date was apparently set for late November, but
recently Fudzilla reported that this date was shifted to December.
Meanwhile, most other sources claimed retail availability of Fermi would
only happen in Q1 2010.

Today’s reports claim Nvidia are likely to have working samples not before 2nd week of January 2010. Xbitlabs speculates an actual release for February 2010. HardOCP is less optimistic, suggesting any “real availability” is unlikely even for March 2010, in a best case scenario.

As we have noticed in the past, every doom and gloom rumour for Nvidia is followed closely by a shining one, so we will watch out. However, considering we are into November now, and we have no word from Nvidia on the gaming side of Fermi, let alone any demonstrations of games running on Fermi based products, whatsoever, 2010 does sound a much more likely date than December 2009. Having said that, this industry does move at blistering pace, and anything can change.

Despite rumours, if you were waiting for Nvidia’s next-gen, it would probably be wise to stop waiting. Fermi, while a very promising GPU on paper, remains only on paper, even today, with no solid evidence of a launch in the very near future.

Sadly, for gamers and enthusiasts, the widespread shortage of ATI Radeon HD 5800 series means there is not much choice out there.

Update: SemiAccurate
claims Fermi A2 silicon has taped out. A Q1/February launch is suggested, best case scenario. At this point, a majority of reporters are speculating late Q1 for retail availability.
