UPDATED: Report: Major price cuts for NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460 and GTX 470

Reported by on Thursday, October 21 2010 1:50 pm

HardOCP reports that NVIDIA's GTX 460 1 GB and GTX 470 are set to see some major price cuts as a response to AMD's Radeon HD 6800 series, which releases in a few hours' time. The GTX 460 1 GB is currently available for ~$210, though there are a slew of overclocked versions up to $250. The GTX 470 currently retails for $300. The first signs of movement are noticeable in Europe, with GTX 470s falling from ~€250 to under €220. If similar trends hold, we may see the GTX 470 as low as $250.

At this price, the GTX 470 could be impressive value-for-money, though the HD 6870 may be the more practical card overall. The GTX 460 1GB, however, is in a tough spot. It is likely to end up slower than the Radeon HD 6850, which will be priced under $200. How attractive the GTX 460 1GB is tomorrow will depend on how severe the price cut is.

Interestingly, HardOCP made no mention of the GTX 460 768 MB. Already available at a bargain price of $165 after a series of price cuts, and arguably the best bang-for-the-buck GPU out there today, we are not sure how much further it can fall in price. Certainly, the Radeon HD 6850 will end up a bit more expensive but considerably faster in performance and at a lower power consumption.

The price cuts are expected to be in effect at HD 6800 release time. In the end, the real winner is the consumer, gaining a new level of performance for the same price.

UPDATE: In line with the observed price movements, Fudzilla reports the confirmed new prices for GTX 470 and GTX 460 1 GB:

GTX 470: $259 / 219

GTX 460 1GB: $199 / €169

Even better news is that both cards could actually be found for cheaper in e-tail.
