Valve launched a new teaser site, with a countdown clock that will end Monday 10AM PT. It is likely that the countdown is related to the Steam Box announcement.

Steam Box

Gabe Newell mentioned earlier this week at LinuxCon 2013 that Valve will share more details regarding its Steam Box next week. While there has been little information regarding the device till now, it looks like Valve will go the Nvidia route with the Steam Box and create a reference design that other hardware manufacturers can tweak with and customize. Valve already has one of the most robust game distribution systems in Steam, so it should not lack for content.

Newell also said during the keynote that, “There are thermal issues and sound issues, and also a lot of input issues. The next step in our contribution to this is to release some work we’ve done on the hardware side.”

Also, in an image teased by Valve on the site, the game controller features three buttons instead of the four configuration seen on the Xbox controller and the DualShock controller. It should be interesting to see how the different configuration plays out during gaming. On the site, Valve says that, “Last year, we shipped a software feature called Big Picture, a user-interface tailored for televisions and gamepads. This year we’ve been working on even more ways to connect the dots for customers who want Steam in the living-room. Soon, we’ll be adding you to our design process, so that you can help us mould the future of Steam.”
