Last month rumors were circulating about the possibility of VEVO being added as a standalone channel on Apple TV. A new report claims that the channel might be added to Apple’s set-top box this week.
VEVO is a very popular music channel. In May alone the service had 62 million unique U.S. visitors. Only 4.2 million of those visitors watched videos through mobile devices. Its a joint venture between Sony Music Entertainment and Universal Music Group that delivers on-demand music videos as well as original content. VEVO plays host to more than 75,000 music videos from over 21,000 artists. Its particularly popular with teens.
The Wall Street Journal reports today that VEVO has struck a deal with Apple to bring a channel for the Apple TV, through which users will be able to access VEVO’s vast library. It is also said to have struck a deal with Samsung in order to bring its content over to the Korean manufacturer’s smart televisions, though the implementation of this deal is said to be several weeks away. For the Apple TV, the VEVO channel may be launched as soon as this week.
One of the reasons behind this deal is said to be VEVO’s strategy to get people to watch videos through its own sites and apps instead of through YouTube, which takes a major chunk of its ad revenue. It is believed that Google, which owns YouTube, may take as much as 50 percent of partners’ ad revenue. This is obviously not entirely beneficial for VEVO, which would get to get 100 percent of ad revenue if videos are watched through its website or apps. The report says that as part of the deal, both Apple and Samsung will allow VEVO to serve ads. No confirmed release date for the Apple TV channel has been provided as yet.
