VIA CPU Market Share Hit 2.5%

VIA saw its third-quarter desktop-CPU shipments increase 20%
sequentially. The surge in shipments helped VIA increase its share of the
desktop CPU market to 2.5%. VIA attributed the growth to healthy CPU shipments
for digital-media devices (DMDs), thin clients and IP set-top boxes (STBs). VIA
has also been making strong headway in the rapidly growing IPC market, which VIA
targets with its Eden processor platform. The X86-based Eden processors consume
fewer than seven watts TDP and offer support for DDR400 SDRAM. In the first half
of next year, VIA aims to incorporate the Esther core into its Eden processors.
The Esther-based processors will be built using a 90nm process at IBM, and will
dissipate only 3.5 watts, at most, when running at 1GHz.

Ed’ note : From our sources, VIA is current sampling a new
Eden ESP platform powered by two Eden Embedded System Platform Processor (ESP)
running at 1Ghz each. The dual processor platform is expected to by ready by Q1
next year.
