Via plans to develop a line of chipsets for the server market this year, as the infrastructure supplier expands beyond its roots in the PC. Next week, VIA will introduce a program to place four of its C3 microprocessors in a single rack, targeting customers interested in embedded applications and in parallel processing calculations. Via plans to address the commodity server market with its new products, for those small businesses that want to run a dedicated server but might be scared off by the cost as well as the required IT resources. Via will compete with companies like Broadcom’s ServerWorks as well as Intel and NVIDIA. VIA also plans to include a “stable image program” like Intel’s. The internally-designed platform due next week will include a pair of 2-GHz C3 processors, each mounted on a mini-ITX platform. The two boards can then be inserted in a single rack. The Mirra Personal Server, built around a C3-based mini-ITX platform, as an example of the initiative’s direction.
