Visceral Games, a studio under the Electronic Arts wing, has announced that the much-anticipated third-person shooter Dead Space 3 will feature voice commands with the Xbox 360's Kinect.

The game will take advantage of the built-in microphone in Microsoft's motion sensor camera, allowing players to issue simple voice commands to find objectives, give health or ammo to a partner, revive allies, attack enemies, and more.

“The voice commands in Dead Space 3 give players a unique way to take down the terror, whether they choose to face the Necromorphs alone in single-player, or alongside a friend with drop-in / drop-out co-op,” said Steve Papoutsis, VP and GM of Visceral Games, and Executive Producer on Dead Space 3. “Dead Space 3 delivers the action-horror experience our fans have come to know and love. And with the ability to survive the adventure alone, with a friend, or with Kinect, we’re excited about extending the spine-tingling Dead Space experience to a whole new audience of players.”

While the feature sounds most useful for the new co-op mode, the ability to use voice to issue commands frees up the gamer to spend more time looking for enemies, where split-second reactions are important. That said, it will depend on just how sensitive the Kinect is to picking up those commands, especially if a player has the sound of the game on high, as a failed command to use a health pack could make traditional button-bashing a more reliable option.

Voice recognition with the Kinect allows gamers to issue commands to, for example, watch DVDs, and some other games like Mass Effect 3 also feature the option. We will likely see more games adopt the feature over the next year in efforts to provide a more immersive experience.

Dead Space 3 launches for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC on 5 February 2013 in North America and 8 February 2013 in Europe.
