Mobile carrier Vodafone has issued a statement warning iPhone 4S users not to update to the latest version of iOS released by Apple, which it said causes significant 3G performance issues.

The problem is so severe that Vodafone said some customers “may occasionally experience difficulty in connecting to the network to make or receive calls or texts or to connect to the internet.” This would effectively axe the primary features of a smartphone.

Some users are claiming that their devices are suffering from battery life issues since the update, while others have proposed restoring the phone using iTunes as a possible workaround.

Apple is working on the issue, but it is not clear when it will have a fix available. Vodafone said users who have not upgraded yet should wait until Apple issues its patch. Let's hope that doesn't break something else.

iOS 6.1 is a relatively minor update, the main element of which is the provision of LTE connectivity to more countries. Instead of opening the doors to 4G, however, some users cannot operate on 3G.

Vodafone is not the only company to tell customers not to upgrade. Reports suggest that 3 in Austria also warned users to avoid the latest iOS patch. Others are likely to follow suit.
