VR-Zone held a Technology Bazaar at NTU (Nanyang Technological University) from the 25-29th of July 2005. This time the theme is “Digital Hostel” and we set up a real-life Digital Hostel right smack in the Centre of NTU’s most popular canteen.

Hostel” and we set up a real-life Digital Hostel right smack in the Centre
of NTU’s most popular canteen.

The Digital Hostel

The Home Theatre PC (HTPC) for great enjoyment of DVDs in
between study time

The HTPC was powered by the Intel Pentium D and displayed
beautifully on the 19″ LG Flatron LCD Monitor.

The computer systems of the room-mates for both work and
play

As seen above, this room is shared by Andy and Jacob. Jacob owns
a previous-generation single-core Intel Pentium 4 2.8Ghz while Andy owns the
latest Dual-core Pentium D 2.8Ghz. They are both doing video conversion in the
background while playing the CPU-demanding Unreal Tournament 2004. Although
both are using Inno3D’s 6600GT powerd by the nVidia 6 Generation of GPUs, Andy’s
Dual-core Pentium D runs the game liquid smooth while Jacob’s Single-Core Pentium
4 drops to choppy frame rates of below 20. The winner was of course Andy.

As seen, both PCs were powered by Kingston DDR2 memory, and using the Shuttle
XPC Small Form Factor Barebones, which is the prefered form of PCs in hostels
where space is limited.

A huge crowd of students and staff alike crowded into the Digital
Hostel…
