Walmart is one of the biggest retailers based in the U.S. The chain has decided to sell both new iPhones, the iPhone 5C and iPhone 5S, at a discount from the very day Apple launches them.
Its not unusual for retailers to offer discounts on smartphones, but such discounts are not often seen particularly in the case of a new iPhone. Usually price cuts come after a few months, devices that don’t perform well often end up being discounted as well. Walmart probably won’t be expecting that the new iPhones won’t bring in more customers, instead it might have decided to offer this discount so as to steal customers that may line up outside Apple or carrier stores.
Apple announced the on-contract pricing for its new iPhones at the September 10 media event. The 16GB iPhone 5C costs $99 and 16GB iPhone 5S carries a $199 price tag, along with a two year contract with either Sprint, Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile in the U.S. Walmart is offering the iPhone 5C for $79 and iPhone 5S for $189, both are 16GB models and a contract with the aforementioned carriers will be required.
Those who can wait until September 21 will get an additional bang for their buck. Walmart’s new smartphone trade-in program kicks off on September 21, it will offer immediate credit for the device being traded in, the credit can be put towards the purchase of a new iPhone, which will further bring costs down.
