Warner Bros. has released the first official trailer for Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, introducing us to new characters, new places, and the infamous Smaug the Magnificent.
The two-minute trailer provides an exhilarating teaser of what is to come in the second instalment of the Hobbit trilogy, due to release later this year.
Among the iconic locations we get to see are Erebor, Dale, Dol Guldur, the spider-infested Mirkwood, and King Thranduil’s underground Elven kingdom.
All the Dwarves are back, as are Bilbo, Gandalf and Radagast, but we also get to see several new characters, including Bard the Bowman and Beorn. Legolas, son of Thranduil, makes a return, and Jackson introduces a newly-created female Elf character called Tauriel, neither of whom feature in the book.
The biggest reveal is found in the last few seconds, however: the first look at the dragon (of which we only saw fleeting glimpses of in An Unexpected Journey). If you don’t want Smaug’s appearance to be spoiled before the movie itself, stop the trailer just after the titles appear (around the 1:45 mark).
The Desolation of Smaug opens in cinemas on 13 December.
