Windows Phone 7.5 officially launched in Singapore; Samsung Omnia W to retail in Q4
Good news to users who are using Windows Phone 7. This morning, Microsoft Singapore has officially announced the launch of their long-awaited Windows Phone 7.5 (formerly codenamed "Mango"). The update for existing Windows Phone 7 will begin today and available to most customers by end of October. HTC and Samsung were also at the event to unveil their new phones based on Windows Phone 7.5 – HTC Radar and Samsung Omnia W.
Samsung and HTC are the only partners at the Microsoft Windows Phone 7.5 launch event this morning. The Taiwanese manufacturer unveiled the HTC Radar which has an aluminium unibody, features 3.8-inch touchscreen display and 5-megapixel rear camera. The HTC Radar also comes with the proprietary HTC Hub, which offers applications and utilities such as weather and stocks application, and HTC Watch that allows users to discover the latest video content. The HTC Radar is scheduled to retail in October at a suggested retail price of S$569.
The Samsung Omnia W has a smaller 3.7-inch Super AMOLED touchscreen, compared to the HTC Radar. The Omnia W has a metallic finish and is equipped with a 1.4GHz processor. Samsung has also included their exclusive apps such as Samsung AllShare which offers seamless content transfer between smartphone and other DLNA-enabled devices, and upgraded Samsung eBook client for your ebook reading pleasure. With Windows Phone 7.5, you can access the multitask screen, though it only shows up to five applications. There's also no option to close the application. The Samsung Omnia W will retail next month at S$498 (inclusive of GST) without line contract. John Fernandes, marketing and operations director of Microsoft Singapore, introduced the new Windows Phone 7.5 and talked about the features the new version brings. "About a year ago, we launched Windows Phone 7 which we started afresh. It gave a new set of experiences and our approach towards the mobile platform. Over that year, we listened to our customers, users and partners, and we got some good feedback. Microsoft thinks in terms of the Windows ecosystem – PC, phone and web coming together. And so, Windows Phone 7.5 is a key point in our overall strategy here and globally. With the launch of Windows Phone 7.5, we also opened up the Marketplace. And today we have over 30,000 applications in the Marketplace" said Fernandes.
