Running on the clouds may be one of Windows Phone 8’s main focuses.  Insider Paul Thurrott found evidence that “Data Smart” and traffic compression are Microsoft’s methods for more efficient use of data on Windows Phone 8.

Data Smart will enable users to manage their data by keeping track of their usage by billing cycles, and breaks down data usage based on carrier data vs Wi-Fi.  Essentially, Data Smart is a Windows Phone 8 built-in data meter that may help users from data overages—thus, preventing a hefty bill at the end of the month.

Internet Explorer 10 mobile browser will also have a data usage friendly feature—basically a proxy-type service that compresses web traffic and thereby reducing data usage.  It’s nothing new, Silk Browser on the Kindle uses the same type of technology, but nonetheless it’s an added bonus for people who browse the internet a lot on their phone.

An unlimited data plan is hard to come by with current major carriers, and some of the built in data management features in Windows Phone 8 will help keep users online longer without having to worry too much about paying extra for data overages.

Oh look, a bug!
