A 20-year-old woman nearly died after spending a mind-boggling 40 hours seated at her computer to play an online game.

The woman, known by the pseudonym Xiao Han, complained of leg pains and was taken to hospital in the Fujian province, where she was diagnosed with Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT).

The condition, generally associated with long flights, results in blood clots in the legs, but which can then become dislodged and travel to the lungs, where they can be fatal.

Xiao Han had to undergo extensive surgery and receive medication for the problem, but has now recovered.

It is not clear what game she was playing, but reports suggest she spent 40 continuous hours at her computer. There are no details about what she did for food, rest, or the all important “bio” breaks.

This is not the first time DVT caused by gaming marathons has become a problem. A Taiwanese man died in an internet café last year after developing the ailment during a long gaming session, showing the importance of regular breaks from computers.

Gaming addiction has been a cause for concern in many countries, particularly in Asia, with some governments implementing curfews or other restrictive measures. The simplest solution for avoiding DVT, however, is not to remain in a stationary position for a long period of time.
