Chilled Water Pipes Keeping the Servers Cool
Interestingly, the servers are housed in shipping containers spread out over a large indoor parking lot on the ground floor, “serving up e-mail, managing instant messages, or running applications for Microsoft's soon-to-be-launched cloud-based operating system--Windows Azure”. Microsoft also has four traditional raised floor server rooms upstairs, each around 12,000 square feet, forming part of a data center that will finally take up a whopping 700,000 square feet. Cooling the servers is no easy feat – the data center is dependent on 7.5 miles worth of chilled water piping to keep the servers cool!
"I think, I'm not 100 percent sure, but I think this could be the largest data center in the world," said Arne Josefsberg, general manager of infrastructure services for Microsoft's data center operations.
