Microsoft announced that it has sold more than 80 million Xbox 360 consoles since 2005, and has detailed three new holiday bundles.
The 80 million figure is the total number of units sold to retailers, and not directly to customers. Microsoft launched the Xbox 360 in North America in November 2005. The Xbox 360’s 80 million sales are far greater than what the original Xbox managed at 24 million. However, the Xbox 360 had a longer life cycle and is now in its eighth year while the original Xbox was available for four years, from 2001 to 2005.
Microsoft mentioned that it has managed to sell 1.6 million units this year, and made $401.2 million in software sales in September thanks to the launch of Grand Theft Auto V. Sony’s PlayStation 3 also saw a huge increase in growth last month due to the GTA V bundle. Microsoft’s next-gen console, the Xbox One, will be available from November 22 in North America for $499.
Even after the Xbox One is launched, Microsoft is not going to abandon the Xbox 360, and has detailed three holiday bundles for this holiday season. The first bundle offers the Xbox 360 250 GB console along with games such as Halo 4 and Tomb Raider, and will be available for $300. The 4 GB console unit with Kinect and games like Kinect Adventures and Kinect Sports 2 will also be on offer for $300. The last bundle, which costs $400, comes with a 250 GB Xbox 360 console, Kinect and Forza Horizon.
