The codename for Microsoft's next-generation console is Durango, according to several sources cited by gaming news website Kotaku.

The strange name will be employed for the next Xbox as it approaches launch, before being changed to its formal launch title, which is widely believed to be Xbox 720. 
 
Why it doesn't just go with the latter right now is anyone's guess, but likely it wants to keep some of the features under wraps, such as a rumoured touchscreen controller similar to that of the Wii U.

Durango is one of Mexico's 31 states, the significance of which remains unknown. However, Microsoft's codename for the Kinect was Project Natal, a city in Brazil, suggesting a policy of using place names for secret projects.
 
We have to admit that it's a bit of a weird choice of codename, compared to, for example, Revolution for the Wii, which had some relevance to what the console was intended to do, but the odd name might have so far helped avoid spying eyes as Microsoft prepares its competition to the Wii U.
