small XFX GeForce 6600GT PCIe Review

Today we bring you a review of XFX’s latest mid-ranged graphics card, the XFX GeForce 6600GT. Running a 500MHz core speed and equipped with 128MB of DDR3, does the 6600GT have what it takes to outperform the ATI Radeon X700 Pro? Come and take a closer look.

Introduction:

The only trend that we’ve seen hold true for mid-ranged (sub $ 200) graphics cards over the last few years has been that they are off-shoots of their high end flagship counterparts, usually with less pixel and vertex pipelines, cheaper memory, and slower core speeds. Other than that, there is little that bonds one generation of mid-ranged cards from the next. As you may remember, earlier this year at Quakecon we brought you one of the first news posts about the GeForce 6600GT, a sub $ 200 card based on NVIDIA’s NV40 architecture. From our testing with NVIDIA and ATI’s flagship AGP parts last year, we can safely say that NVIDIA’s GeForce 6800GT is a clear winner at the $ 400 price point, while there is a tie between the GeForce 6800 Ultra and Radeon X800 XT Platinum Edition at the $ 500 price point.

The GeForce 6600GT has actually been shipping in retail form for a few months now, and a few weeks ago we were able to get our first shipping sample of the GeForce 6600GT, the XFX GeForce 6600GT. Unlike the $ 400 AGP graphics cards market, ATI’s sub-$ 200 Radeon X700 Pro and NVIDIA’s GeForce 6600GT are on an even playing field, sharing a similar architectural makeup, both using 8 pixel pipelines and four vertex engines.

So which mid-ranged card should you chose to put into your new PCI Express rig? Come and take a closer look.

XFX has lost a little steam when it comes to their bundle, outfitting their GeForce 6600GT with three mediocre gaming titles that are already showing their age. In addition to their bundle, they do include two DVI to VGA adapters, and the standard RCA and S-Video cables so you can output to your television.
