Xiaomi, a Chinese gadget maker known more for their Android-based handsets, is working on a tablet dubbed ‘ZiMi’ (roughly means ‘Purple Rice’ in English).

For those that are not in tune with the Android customization scenes, Xiaomi is also the innovator of the popular Android-based MIUI ROM.  The supposed ZiMi tablet will come MIUI at launch, and according a source the custom ROM will have 23 built-in languages.  This is great news for MIUI fans that don’t speak Chinese or English exclusively.

On the hardware end, the ZiMi tablet is a 7-inch tablet that boasts a 1280×800 display, a 1.2GHz quad-core Tegra 3 CPU, 1GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage, 3G/2G connectivity, and a 4000mAh battery.

Xiaomi’s philosophy in the smartphone business has always been trying to strike balance between quality and price.  So although a Tegra 3-powered tablet may seem outdated, the build quality of the tablet itself might not be as shoddy as one would think.  Take into account that MIUI is one of the best custom Android concoctions out there and whatever rice Xiaomi serves up will sure to give anyone a full belly.
