Yahoo's CEO, Marissa Mayer, has authorised the company to give all of its US employees a complementary iPhone 5, or an Android or Windows Phone 8 device, putting an end to its previous reliance on BlackBerry phones.

Yahoo's CEO, Marissa Mayer, has authorised the company to give all of its US employees a complementary iPhone 5, or an Android or Windows Phone 8 device, putting an end to its previous reliance on BlackBerry phones.

The new programme is called “Yahoo! Smart Phones, Smart Fun!” It lets staff select from a range of leading smartphones and pays their data connection and phone bills, but only employees in the US can avail of it.

The selection available includes Apple's recently announced iPhone 5, as well as the Samsung Galaxy S III,  the HTC One X, HTC EVO 4G LTE, or the Nokia Lumia 920, the flagship for Microsoft's latest Windows Phone release.

The offer was discovered in a leaked memo from Mayer to staff, which revealed that “as of today, Yahoo is moving off of BlackBerry as our corporate phones,” embracing more modern and successful mobile platforms and brands instead.

The move is designed so that employees “have devices similar to our users,” in efforts to “think and work as the majority of our users do.”

Mayer, who previously worked at Google for 13 years, is already a popular woman in the company, giving staff free lunch as one of her first changes after taking on the big job in July, so this will only help boost her support. However, the freebies will cost the company millions when it is trying to turn around its already struggling finances.
