Yahoo sites outrank Google in the U.S. for the first time since 2011
For the first time since May 2011, Yahoo sites got more visitors than Google for the month of July 2013.
With 196.6 million visits to Google’s 192.3 million, Yahoo has bested Google in terms of traffic in the United States. ComScore’s metrics suggest that Yahoo’s traffic does not yet include Tumblr, which got 38.3 million visits for the month of July. A statement from ComScore says, “Tumblr is not currently included in the Yahoo! Sites roll-up. Seems there are other factors at play, and given how close Yahoo Sites and Google have been in recent months it can likely just be normal seasonal/month-to-month fluctuations.”
Yahoo’s numbers are up by 20% from July 2012, and most of this has to do with the buzz Yahoo is generating in the media lately. Ever since Marissa Mayer took over at the helm, Yahoo has made a total of 22 acquisitions, the largest being Tumblr, which Yahoo bought for $1.1 billion. The brand has also shifted its focus to mobiles and tablets, and Yahoo Mail for tablets saw a 120% increase in the number of active users. Similarly, the mobile edition of Yahoo Weather has won numerous design awards and has been launched for Android last week.
