Radio Frequency Frequency Identification - Boom or Bane?

We've seen RFID being applied in many fields, including payment systems and access systems etc. Recently, Silverstone launched their latest storage product, the Treasure TS-01 2.5" external hard drive case. The distinct difference of the TS-01 lies in its RFID encryption ability. The hard drive case actually comes bundled with two unique RFID keys and without them, the system will not even detect the external hard drive, let alone reading from it.

Security "pebbles". Nifty enough to hang on to your keys without your pockets bulging, yet not invisibly small to render your access impossible. I'll leave you guys to find out how they exactly work when you get one, but trust me, it is pretty nifty. ;)

How It Adds Up

The Treasure's a breeze to use, requiring users to just tap the RFID key on the enclosure prior to use. Of course, there's a little warmup to do as the Treasure prepares for some radio matchmaking by tapping the pebbles to the RFID sensor.

The Treasure probably won't win the hearts of the FBI, but it's sufficient for keeping sensitive data away from fishy colleagues in your office. The beeping noises emitted before authentication's a mild irritant, or you could wow your friends with the all out stealth feel.

Just in case the enclosure fails on you, you can just get another similar case and use your old RFID keys to hook your data up. With that, you're pretty safe keeping your secrets in the Treasure, as long as you don't lose those pebbles. ;)
