Dell's new 2407WFP

21 March 2006 - Engadget has a scoop about the latest Dell 24 inch monitor showing up on Dell Japan's site. The new 2407WFP is the successor to the popular 2405WFP, but with added functionally and improvement on the specifications area. The 2407WFP would support HDCP, 1000:1 contast ratio, 6ms response time, a 4 in 1 card reader, and a resolution of 1920 x 1200. But however, they've stated that this monitor would go at a rather expensive price tag of USD$1400, which might put off potential buyers, considering the fact that other brands/models can be bought cheaper. "They're not exactly telling us anything more about Dell's 2407WFP than we expected would be coming from the 2405FPW's successor (usual 24-incher specs: 1920 x 1200, addition of HDCP, 500 cd/m2 brightness, 1000:1 contrast ratio, 6ms response time, 4-in-1 card reader, etc.), but we're gonna be a little less than enthused if this thing goes in America for what they're asking in Japan: ¥157,500 -- about $1,400 US. Of course, domestic product prices gone foreign typically get inflated, we know, but it's a kind of inauspicious way to first hear about a products we've been looking forward to, ourselves."

LG-Philips to have 100" LCD TV

10 March 2006 - Just when you think LCD TVs are not going to get bigger, due to it's absurd pricing / tech limitations, LG-Philips' newest LCD TV will probably stun you. They've just announced the 7th Gen substrate that is about 76" by 89" and properly sized it according the the aspect ratio. With approx. max resolution of 3160x1980, and about 6.2M in pixel count, the LCD panel might be rare, and hard to make. There is a 20% waste on the "raw" panel, just as to resize it into the proper aspect ratio. "LG Philips LCD (LPL), the number one or number two LCD manufacturer in the world (depending on which particular week of the year it is), just announce the company's first 100" LCD. LPL claims a 5ms response time and 3000:1 contrast ratio. Like most LPL panels, the display uses a Super IPS panel mode."

Too many LCD panels mean TV, monitor prices will tumble

23 March 2006 - Further comfirmation that prices of LCD TVs and monitors will fall over the next few months has come from a Merrill Lynch analyst. Speaking to the Taipei Times, the analyst said overcapacity of LCD panels used in monitors and TVs is the problem. It's not demand that's the problem, it's oversupply, Daniel Kim told the newspaper. It's the two LCD giants, Samsung and LG Philips, which are largely responsible for the overcapacity problem. And prices are expected to be weak for several months ahead, he warned.

24 monitors, FPS gaming for you sir?

13 March 2006 - Engadget has a scoop about a crazy set of systems, hooked to 24 LCD displays, with a total resolution of 10240 x 3072. With this sort of resolution, it requires a set 12 Linux servers running distributed computing software to drive the monster displays. But with this sort of power, it could only do Quake III at just 15 to 30 fps. Mega displays are not meant for gaming, just yet. "Leading the life of an Engadget editor, you don't ever think you could come upon a rig or setup with too much screen real estate. Sure, you can overcompensate in any number of ways -- like, say, too much drive space (what, you really need 8TB?) -- but pixel acreage never struck us as one of them. Until now. Say hello to Virginia Tech's 31 million pixel-pusher friends, their 24 display array "workstation" runs at 10240 x 3072. Apparently it takes 12 Linux servers running distributed computing software to operate, and can play Quake III at 15-30FPS. Well done, sirs, well done. We take it back, it's not too much. It's never too much."
