Most people may not know it, but Oracle actually sells a commercial version of the OpenOffice office productivity suite that featured several proprietary components layered over the free software suite in order to deliver a more complete 'out-of-the-box' computing experience for various users such as businesses and enterprises. Remember how Google claimed that users no longer had to fork out money for a fully featured office productivity suite like Microsoft Office since its cloud-based Google Docs application could perform most, if not all of the tasks found in the former from the convenience of a web browser? Well, it seems that Google is now learning that one does not challenge Microsoft without facing some form of consequences. At least, not with the Redmond giant poised to take on both OpenOffice and Google Docs with plans for global availability of its free Office Web Apps online service.
Well, that took the developers over at The Document Foundation long enough. But as the saying goes, good things come to those who wait, and it appears that such sayings do apply to software as well. And users who are bored of Microsoft Office or OpenOffice now have a third office suite to play with: the finalized version of LibreOffice 3.3 has been officially released for public download and is available for all three major operating systems.
Google has introduced an additional feature to Google Docs which allow users to upload, view and store their videos to the productivity suite. Although you can upload any files since last year, you can't watch videos stored then.
