Inevitably creating a wave of headaches for some, but with a basis pertaining to safety, the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) has stated that from the 16th of May it will no longer be allowing devices containing lithium-ion batteries to be shipped overseas.
We missed Thecus at CeBIT earlier this month, but we got a chance to catch up with the company at ISF and have a look at some of its new products. On display were the recently announced N2800 and N4800 Atom powered NAS boxes as well as the Core i3 powered N8850 which is part of a new series of tower NAS products from Thecus for more demanding users, as well as Thecus new tablet.
One issue in the past has been that NAS boxes powered by Intel's Atom processors have been way too expensive to hit consumer level price points and as such this market space has been pretty exclusive to RISC – generally ARM or MIPS – powered solutions. This appears to be changing, as at the Intel Storage Forums inXtron was showing off its Akitio MyCloud Pro which is targeted to retail at sub US$200 while sporting an Atom processor and a fair few other goodies.
Earlier today VR-Zone attended the Intel's Storage Forum 2012 in Taipei, Taiwan and although the company didn't reveal any big news at the event, one message was very clear this year and that is that Intel is investing heavily into storage solutions. At the event Intel talked about everything from entry level "Personal Cloud" devices, to SSD's, 10Gbps Ethernet all the way to Xeon powered solutions.
Last Friday, 50 VRForums enthusiasts in Singapore were invited to a dinner event in celebration of Cooler Master's 20th Anniversary. Sadly, we've just heard that Micron's CEO and chairman Steve Appleton has died at 51 years of age on Friday morning as the result of a small plane crash at Boise, Idaho. it's been reported that Appleton was flying alone in his Lancair fixed-wing single-engine stunt plane when something caused the plane to malfunction and plummet to the ground.
Today Bethesda, id's parent company revealed the dates and venue for this year's QuakeCon event, one of the largest and longest running LAN parties in existence. The event will be held at the Hilton Anatole in Dallas, Texas, running from August 2nd to the 5th. The Hilton Anatole has hosted QuakeCon for five out of the last six years and is offering a special rate for attendees.

Last weekend, tech media outlets like VR-Zone and other ASEAN-based overclockers were invited to attend the Gigabyte X79 Plug-Fest OC event which was held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Besides introducing their latest range of Gigabyte X79 motherboards for the new Socket 2011 chips, Liquid Nitrogen was provided for those in attendance to push the limits of the latest Intel Sandy Bridge-E processors at sub-zero temperatures.

We spent a day at the Intel Embedded Developer Summit in Taipei and found out that the company is busy trying to make embedded computing sexy.
Professional level overclocking has become a very competitive sport, mind you, it's only really competitive within the community itself but that hasn't stopped the motherboard manufacturers to host competitions for the world's best overclockers. Friday saw the fourth annual MSI Master Overclocking Arena final in Taipei with competitors from all over the planet compete to become the world champion, or at least the world champion using MSI motherboards to overclock with.
Yesterday we attended AMD's Technical Forum and Exhibition, or TFE as it's simply called and this was the 7th time AMD held the event in Taipei. Although AMD didn't' talk too much about its future products, there were a couple of glimpses of new technology and there was also an NDA press briefing for the upcoming FX-processors from AMD, but sadly we can't tell you about it, yet.
Yesterday we attended Global Foundries Global Technology Conference 2011 in Hsinchu, Taiwan and although the company didn't reveal anything new in addition to what was announced at its conference in in Santa Clara a couple of weeks ago, as we didn't attend that conference, we thought we'd sum up some of the things the company is working on. As always with these kind of events, only so many details are revealed, as much of what Global Foundries does are company secrets, or it's related to its partners products and as such Global Foundries can't talk about a lot of the specifics.
