Although Intel's new mobile Atom processors were announced at the very end of last year, retail availability of netbooks based on the new processors was meant to start by mid-January, but it's taken Acer until now to get its first product out in the market. The Aspire One D270 is not as you might be forgiven to think; sporting an Atom D2700, but rather it has Intel's entry level mobile Atom N2600 under the hood.
Gigabyte’s notebook division has updated a few of its products in time for CES and we’ve already told you about one of them, the Booktop T1132N. The other two refreshed products are the T1006M convertible netbook and the S1081 tablet, both of which have been given a bump to Intel’s latest Cedar Trail-M Atom processors.
If a teaser video posted by Lenovo on YouTube is anything to go by, Lenovo should be one of the first companies to launch a Cedar Trail-M netbook, although Lenovo seems to have ditched the term netbook in favour of "mini notebook". The IdeaPad S110 should feature the new Atom N2600 processor as well as a few other additions that most netbooks don't have.
We're fairly certain that none of our regular readers are surprised to see the arrival of Intel's Atom N2600 and N2800 Cedar Trail-M based Atom processors today, as we reported about it launching at the very end of the year over a month ago. That said, no products will be available for at least a couple of weeks, although we'd expect that the first Cedar Trail-M netbooks will be shown off at CES.
Looks like Dell has quietly killed their Mini 10 netbooks. If you go to Dell Online Store and try to search for it, you would either not find it, or find that the product is still listed, but no longer available for purchase.
Faced with increasingly tough competition from ARM-powered tablets, mediocre Q3 2011 sales (-32% YoY), and other difficulties, launch of 32 nm "Cedar Tail-M" Atom processors has so far been a troubled affair. At one point this month, there were even strong indications that the new Atom chips won't make it before Christmas. A fresh report, however, comes brings back some hope for a December 2011 launch.
Details of yet another unannounced Atom N2x00 series processor have made an appearance online courtesy of various online retailers and Samsung, who will be fitting the new CPU in some of its upcoming netbooks. Currently no detailed specs are known, but according to information VR-Zone has seen, Intel is working on an off-roadmap single core Atom processors currently only known as the Cedar Trail-M which we have a feeling will be known as the Atom N2100.
It's surprising how much trouble Intel seems to have with its Atom graphics drivers for the mobile Cedar Trail Atom N2600 and N2800 processors, as the company has been forced to push back the launch a second time. If you were hoping for a new Cedar Trail powered netbook for Christmas, we're sorry to disappoint, but it's not going to happen.
