Western Digital has begun producing hard drives after months of halted production due to extensive flooding in Thailand. The announcement has sent shares skyrocketing as the company gears up for the Christmas shopping season.
For Seagate's sake we hope that the second time is the charm, as its first generation of Momentus XT hard drives with a small SLC SSD cache didn't exactly take the world by storm. Currently the new Momentus XT is only available in a single size of 750GB, plus 8GB of SLC NAND flash of course, although the real change is actually the software part and here Seagate has spent a lot of time optimizing things.
The flood in Thailand caught manufacturers off guard, but damages and losses are more than initially analysed. The outlook of the hard disk supplies are grimly forecasted to run out at the end of the year, leading to backlash in the first quarter of 2012.

Media players are hardly what we'd call special these days and you can get some really cheap, if albeit basic models these days that will play pretty much any file format you throw at them. Seagate has been trying to get in to the media player for quite some time and so far the company has come up with some fairly uninspiring solutions, but its new GoFlex Cinema is a rather intriguing piece of hardware.

Well, it looks like Seagate has decided to push external storage up a notch with the announcement of its new GoFlex Desk drive with a capacity of 4TB. Have you purchased an iMac with a 1TB hard disk any time between May and July this year? If so, you might want to consult Apple's web site to see if you qualify for a free replacement of sorts; this is because the Cupertino giant has annouced a replacement program for a "very small number" of 1TB Seagate hard disks which are currently being used in the iMacs, claiming that the aforementioned hard disks sport an issue which could cause it to "fail under certain conditions".
With external storage devices such as portable hard disks now being neccessities for keeping one's data portable, it would make sense that users will crave products which allow them to show off their individuality in a sea of similar-looking devices. And as far as Seagate is concerned, the best way to fulfill such a need will be to deck out its products with bright colours that are reportedly capable of "perking up dull days" and giving one "a fashionable reason to be tech-savvy", like what it has done with its new GoFlex Ultra-portable external hard disk, which is now available in...pink. Yep.
With this new GoFlexAccess app, you can now share and stream your music, photos and videos wirelessly from your phone to your GoFlex home network server easily. Available free on iPhone and Android phones.

Let's face it; everybody knew that Samsung would not have a problem finding a buyer for its hard disk business. And most people would also have guessed that given Samsung's small but respectable market share in the HDD business, it would not take too long before a buyer shows up at Samsung's office with a bag full of cash and and offer to purchase that aforementioned business unit. Which is precisely what just happened today; Seagate is now in the midst of combining its own HDD business with that of Samsung's as we bring you this report.
Seagate has just announced the GoFlex Slim, which claims to be the world's slimmest external hard drive to date. If you are looking for a portable external storage, this one is now available on www.seagate.com, in-stores and selected online retailers.

Swapping out the traditional HDD for an SSD is usually the fastest (and most expensive) way to experience an instantaneous performance boost on a PC, but does it have what it takes to displace the mechanical HDD as the standard for data storage? Apparently, Seagate does not think so.
