The most recent expectations from last year's supercomputing events, of 100 petaflops in 2015 and 1 exaflop in 2018, seems to be too pessimistic, after all. What's enabling the sudden push?

Acer launches the AC100 micro server

Acer launches the AC100 micro server

We've already seen the new range of high-end NAS solutions from Thecus and the company is now being joined in this market space by Acer who has just announced a competing solution in the shape of its AC100 micro server. We have to say that Acer has come up with a better marketing name than Thecus, as calling this product segment for a NAS is really underselling your product.

Boston was demoing a small unit of its Hardcore LSS 200 blade server solution at CeBIT which uses custom made enclosures for the slim-line Super Micro blade motherboards, but things are a lot more complex than that.

ASUS's Dual Socket 2011 Workstation Motherboard - Z9PE-D8 WS

ASUS's Dual Socket 2011 Workstation Motherboard - Z9PE-D8 WS

Performance zealots will remember the ASUS Z7S WS which went head on with then Intel 'Skulltrail' D5400XS Xeon luxury gaming platform (using dual unlocked QX9775 chips), but since then ASUS has done nothing of that sort, leaving EVGA with the iconic SR-2 to mop up things in the Xeon 55xx/56xx era. This is about to change with the imminent launch of the Sandy Bridge-EP Xeon E5 platform, and the ASUS Z9PE-D8 WS may well be the followup that power hungry gamers and high frequency traders are looking for.
